Life & Career

Jose Jalapeno on a Stick, Melvin the Superhero Guy, Bubba J and Achmed the Dead Terrorists…these are just some of Jeff Dunham’s most famous alter-egos, his ventriloquist dummies that say some of the most risqué and politically incorrect jokes on the comedian’s mind. Dunham, who shot to fame in the last decade has been credited with reviving Ventriloquism and turning it into a true art form.

His fascination with ventriloquism began when he was eight years old, when his parents gave him a dummy and a ventriloquism record for Christmas. He taught himself through library books, hours of practice and study of famous ventriloquist Edgar Bergen. As a young teen, he began attending Vent Haven ConVENTion (where he joined and won so many competitions, they forced him to retire as a champion) and he performed at school, church, amusements parks, TV commercials and private events. He attended to Baylor University in Waco, Texas while performing for private events during the weekend for companies such as GE.

After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career and made his national TV debut on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, but still worked tirelessly for the next decade, appearing at comedy clubs and on shows like Ellen, 60 Minutes II, Fox Sports Net's The Best Damn Sports Show Period, Hollywood Squares, Entertainment Tonight, Good Morning America and the WB's Blue Collar TV.

In 2003, he received his big break with when he taped his own half hour segment for Comedy Central Presents with his characters José Jalapeño on a Stick, Walter, Melvin the Superhero Guy and Peanut. Despite his successful debut, Comedy Central did not ask him back until 2006, when he filed his solo special Jeff Dunham: Arguing with Myself which premiered to 2 million viewers, a certifiable hit by basic cable TV standards, and was given a second special a year later, Jeff Dunham: Spark of Insanity. He also taped Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special (and released an accompanying Christmas album) for Comedy Central the following year and attracted more than 3 times his debut audience (6.6 million people) and was the highest rated broadcast in the channel’s history. The Jeff Dunham Show premiered in 2009, but despite its high ratings, was cancelled only after one season due to being panned by critics and high production costs. Jeff continues to tour the US, as well as Europe (where he is a surprise hit) and appears in various TV shows and movies.

Fantastic! Absolutely amazing! Jeff is a master! Just one thing though, just because he’s got puppets, doesn’t mean its for kids!! I think anyone with a pulse will enjoy Jeff’s show. He’s a great ventriloquist and a funny comedian! His jokes and his “banter” with his puppets make the show so great! It’s kind of like watching a dozen different comedians in one night – his puppets have their own unique personalities and jokes, it’s amazing how he keeps it straight, especially when he’s using more than one puppet at a time. You almost forget that those are just puppets! Great, great show!Would recommend this to a friend? Yes

Ahmed the Dead Terrorist, Jose the Jalapeno, Peanut, Walter – these are Jeff’s most popular characters and it’s obvious why! Jeff’s characters are so funny and so alive you suspend reality for a moment and forget that they’re just characters and everything is coming from Jeff himself! It’s hard describe it and there’s just somany facets to the show, but you have to see this one for yourself! Would recommend this to a friend? Yes

You can’t miss Jeff Dunham!! If you comes to your town or city, you gotta watch him! Jeff is an awesome performer and ventriloquist, actor, and comedian! He is really talented and hilarious!!! His characters come in all shapes and sizes (literally) and all of them will make you laugh. It’s really like watching a lot of shows in one, and you’ll feel like you get your money’s worth. He spend about 15 minutes of each character, and the laughs just don’t stop! Would recommend this to a friend? Yes

Where to begin? This show is just frickin’ hilarious and you’re never bored – not for one second! Jeff just keeps coming back with more and more puppets and materials, and his stuff is fresh! The audience couldn’t stop laughing at all his zany antics and jokes! Personally, I really like Walter (maybe the curmudgeon in me can just relate!) though he wasn’t wild or laugh-out-loud, “he” is really funny with his insults and observations! Jeff was absolutely amazing! We were laughing so hard we had to go to the bathroom several times! I thought this would be some old-timey ventriloquist show like you see in the movies, but it’s really fun, fresh and very modern! His characters are so hilarious and he really does a great job with his voices and his acting. You never really realize how difficult this is – being coordinated, doing the right voices at the right time especially when you have 2 puppets to perform with at the same time! Really really worth the money! Would recommend this to a friend? Yes

Jeff is so great at what he does and you suspend your disbelief when he takes the stage. His characters like Achmed and Jose may seem offensive to some, but hey – this is comedy! Just sit back and enjoy the show! Would recommend this to a friend? Yes

I’ve been following Jeff Dunham since he started his career and I just have to say, he just gets better and better! His jokes are still funny, and he has new ones that everyone will enjoy! I have all this DVDs and watch out for new stuff on YouTube because I can’t wait to see his new stuff and I can’t really afford to watch all his shows, but I try to go when I can, that’s because each show can be different because he tends to improvise with his puppets too! In a world that’s filled with the same stuff – singers, dancers, comedians, it’s nice to see a guy who’s different, and that’s Jeff Dunham. I love watching comedians and going to concerts, but I was really looking for something different and Jeff’s show did not just meet my expectations, but totally surpassed it! We couldn’t stop laughing at his characters, and he’s just so talented, you find yourself forgetting for just a moment that they are characters and it’s all him! If he’s in town again, I’m definitely watching this show!Would recommend this to a friend? Yes

Jeff was in full form when we watched him perform! I’ve never been to a ventriloquist show before and they seemed kind of hokey and old-fashioned. But Jeff proved that it can be fresh, fun and entertaining! His characters were so funny – the jalapeno on the stick and achmed the dead terrorist especially! We really enjoyed this show!
