Hometown - Silverspring, Maryland

Before his mad ravings made their way onto cable television, Witty and acerbic Lewis Black originally wanted to be a playwright - he was playwright in residence and associate artistic director for the West Bank Cafe Downstairs Theater Bar in New York City from 1981 to 1989. He honed his comedic talent when he also became master of ceremonies for many of their events and plays. Born in Silver Spring, Maryland, Black is the son of an artist/mechanical engineer father and a schoolteacher. He graduate top of his highschool class in 1966, and was accepted to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and later finished his Masters of Fine Arts at Yale in 1977.

Although he dabbled in standup while at Chapel Hill, Black only pursued stand-up full time, after he left the West Bank Cafe. He performed in various clubs and venues throughout the 90s. in 1996, he made his first appearance on The Daily Show, where he delivered rants on various things for the week. This then became the now infamous Back in Black segment, and is now thoroughly stamped as his signature style. He then filmed four special for Comedy Central, recorded eight albums, filmed two HBO one hour specials,won numerous awards and even had his own show “The Root of All Evil.” Today, he performs in various venues, selling out shows all over the world and continues to appear in movies and TV.
