As we learned the last two years, inviting standup comedian Ricky Gervais to host an awards show is like getting a Doberman Pinscher to herd a flock of sheep.
The actors are like the sheep, vulnerable and not used to being barked at, let alone bitten. Over the last two years, egos have been bruised and bloodied at the awards ceremony as the British comic lashed out at, well, everyone.
Many were surprised earlier last year when NBC, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association invited Ricky back to host the awards again this year. Gervais, who might just have a nose for controversy, couldn't seem to resist.
Hollywood held on to their seats very tightly last night as Gervais settled in. Sensitive celebrities, such as Robert Downy Jr. and Johnny Depp, who were served last year by Gervais, were weary of what this firebrand comic might say, and who his targets were going to be.
Below is a list of some of his targets during the night, and some of his more memorable insults:
1. Kim Kardashian (and the Golden Globes)
What he said:
"The Golden globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashain is to Kate Middleton ... Bit louder, bit trashier, bit drunker, and more easily bought -- allegedly."

What he said:
"The only way he could impregnate a girl is if he borrowed one of Martha Stewart's turkey basters."

What he said:
"I love (Boardwalk Empire)," he said. "It's about a load of immigrants who came to America about a hundred years ago, and they got involved in bribery and corruption and worked their way up into high society. But enough about the Hollywood Foreign Press."

Eddie Murphy and his walking out on hosting the Oscars
What he said:
“He walked out on them. Good for him. When the man who says ‘yes’ to Norbit says ‘no’ to you. You know you’re in trouble.”
5. Madonna
What he said:
Ricky Gervais introduced her by sarcastically saying she was still 'like a virgin' while pretending to muffle a series of snorts.

In a turrn of events that made the whole night much more interesting, Madonna bit Ricky Gervais back, who was giving
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog a run for his money. Madonna stepped onto the stage, she looked Ricky Gervais directly and asked him: 'If I'm just like a virgin Ricky why don't you come over here and do something about it,' before adding: 'I haven't kissed a girl in quite a few years, at least not on TV'.
